We encourage ALL BAPTIZED children, youth, and adults to attend this Penance Service as part of your Lenten Preparation to celebrate God's Victory over sin and death every Sunday and especially on Easter Sunday!!!
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is a divine gift of healing from God.
In this special Penance Service, Jesus forgives our sins as we humbly confess them. He restores our friendship with him and returns us to a state of grace. He heals and strengthens our souls.
EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE (children, youth, and adults)
BEFORE the Penance Service, we sit quietly and review questions like these to help us reflect on our relationship with God and others.
Is God #1 in my life? Do I ask God in prayer to show me HIS WILL every day?
Do I attend Mass every Sunday and participate as much as I can with a good heart?
Do I show respect to my Mom and Dad and others in authority?
Have I been kind to my brothers and sisters and those around me?
Would God see my thoughts and actions as good and pure?
Have I been honest with everyone?
Have I told the truth?
Have I been grateful for what I have?
Am I thankful for all God's blessings?
Am I using my time, talent, and treasures to know and love and serve God?
The Holy Spirit will guide each of us to know what to share with the priest in confession.
PENANCE SERVICE
The Deacon will lead us in prayer and the reading of God's WORD. We will ALL say the Act of Contrition together:
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you whom i should love above all things.
I firmly intend with your help to do penance,
to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God have mercy. Amen
CONFESSION
The ushers will guide each of us to a priest.
The priest will say, "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
We make the sign of the cross and say: "AMEN".
We say: "Bless me Father, for I have sinned."
Then say: "It has been________months since my last confession.
If this is your FIRST confession you say: "This is my first confession."
You then continue : "These are my sins: __________________. "
We tell the priest those sins we remember from our Examination of Conscience or anything else we need to share with him.
After telling the priest our sins, we say, " I am sorry for these and for all of my sins."
PENANCE
The priest will say a few words to us and then give us a penance (a prayer like Our Father or Hail Mary or kind deed)
The purpose of the penance is to show that you want to make things right with God and others. You say: "Yes Father."
Then the priest will give us the Lord's forgiveness, which is called ABSOLUTION. The priest says a prayer, holding his hands over your head:
God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of His son, has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit."
The priest dismisses us . We say "Thank you, Father" and leave to the quiet area to say your penance that the priest assigned to you.
We thank God for His mercy and the strength and healing we have received in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
