OPENING PRAYER
Listen carefully to the priest's opening prayer.
By your help, we ask you , Lord our God,
may we walk eagerly in that same charity (love for others)
with which, out of love for the world,
your Son handed himself over to death.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit. AMEN
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Sing with the CANTOR:
The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
Have the younger children draw and color a picture of the great things God has done for them.
OVERVIEW of the GOSPEL STORY: John 8:1-11
By his example and works, the Lord teaches us that God extends his MERCY to sinners to free them from slavery to sin.
For the second Sunday in a row, we are presented with a story about a sinner and the self-righteous—who are also sinners but don’t want to admit it. Yet, as Paul says today, all this judgment of others and of ourselves is just so much “rubbish/garbage.”
Salvation does not mean never sinning; it means trust in the love and the power of Christ’s resurrection. Those can enable us to get up after we stumble and run the race to the finish. “See, I am doing something new!”
Discussion Questions
Repenting for our sins dos not mean brooding over the past. How is Jesus calling you to move forward in the transforming power of his love?
How judgmental are you with the other people in your life? How can you bring reconciliation and not condemnation to them? How can you be Jesus to them?
How have other people put you in a box? What way out do you think that Jesus is pointing out to you?
The culture wars of the past decades have divided out country and our church. Yet devotion to the truth can become twisted into self-righteousness How will you avoid this trap?
APPLICATION:
For those who are baptized and confirmed and who have shared in the Eucharist, Lent is a journey of repentance and renewal leading up to the Renewal of Baptismal Promises on Easter.
One traditional way to prepare for that moment is to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation which reunites us more deeply with our God and with our brothers and sisters in the church. If you have not done so already, find an opportunity to celebrate it this week.
Another way is to take a few moments to practice a simple daily prayer process:
The Prayer Process
Gratitude: Thank God for his blessings…..e.g. I thank you God for my health
Awareness: Think about yesterday. Talk to God about the times when you were and were not the-best-version-of-yourself.
Important Moments: What do you think God is trying to say to you today?
FORGIVENESS and Peace: Ask God to forgive you for anything you have done wrong and to fill your heart with peace
Freedom to LEARN and GROW: Talk to God about some way he is inviting you to change and grow.
Love and Pray for Others: Pray for the other people in your life by asking God to guide them and watch over them.
Pray the OUR FATHER:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, (SINS)
as we forgive those who trespass
against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil, AMEN
